At some point planning your trip to Moab, Utah you’re going to be looking for off the beaten path activities and we think the La Sal Mountains are a hidden gem just a short drive from Moab. Our location in the midst of the La Sal Mountain Loop Road is one of the best things about Whispering Oaks Ranch but it’s often overshadowed by our famous neighbors. The La Sals offer a stunning, cooler alternative to the desert scenery of Moab, and they’re worth a visit for anyone looking to explore a different side of Utah’s natural beauty.
The La Sal Mountains are a bit of a local secret. Rising to over 12,000 feet, they offer a respite from the grueling heat that the surrounding desert terrain often has. The high peaks, high-altitude meadows, alpine lakes, and lush forests create a picturesque escape that can feel a world away from the rugged, red rock canyons.
Take some time to experience the beautiful hikes off the La Sal Mountain Loop road. Trails like the Warner Lake Trail offer spectacular views and a chance to immerse yourself in the high mountain environment. The hike to Warner Lake, in particular, is on of our favorites. It’s a moderate trek that rewards you with a serene, alpine lake surrounded by wildflowers and dense forests. The cool, crisp air and the scent of pine are a welcome change from the dusty desert heat.
The La Sals also have a network of mountain biking trails that cater to all levels. The Sovereign Trail is a standout for its intense descents and panoramic views, making it a must-ride for biking enthusiasts.
The higher elevation of the La Sal Mountains offers cooler temperatures and a more comfortable experience than the hotter desert areas. Imagine walking outside your vacation cabin under a canopy of stars with the crisp mountain air filling your lungs—there’s something incredibly peaceful about it.
Don’t forget the winter months. We work hard to keep our roads clear and welcome guests in the winter because the The La Sals transform into a snowy wonderland, perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
So next time you’re in Moab, make sure to set aside some time to explore the La Sal Mountains. They might not have the same fame as Arches or Canyonlands, but they offer less crowds, cooler temperature and their own unique brand of natural beauty and adventure. The La Sals are a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences are the ones just off the beaten path.
